Dr.Faustus as a Morality Play

                              

v    Introduction :-

                              “Dr.Faustus” is written by Christopher Marlowe. It is a very good tragedy. In this play the main and central character is Dr. Faustus. And here we discuss about detail note on character of Dr.Faustus. When we start about discussion of him first know something about Christopher Marlowe.

v    Christopher Marlowe :-

                              Christopher Marlowe was one of the dominate figure in history of English Renaissance. He was not only a dramatist but also a good poet and translator. In the Elizabethan Age. He was an first tragedian of his day. He was an Elizabethan age’s writer. So he wrote a good play and he wrote good drama and some of his plays known and played on that day.
                                   
                                    He wrote good drama but he raised his subject matter of the drama to a higher level. In his play he provided big heroic subjects and that this big heroic subject appealed and presents to the imagination in his play was very high in sometime and we can’t understand easily.

                             In this plays he gave life and reality to his character. He didn’t seize character longer but he gave him freedom and life and reality. The old rhyming lines of Romantic drama, he put aside ; blank verse had little grip, when we took it in hand, but he fathomed its immense possibilities and saw how it could be made the expression of the finest wit or the most delicate fancy.

                             He also gave a unity to drama. He glorified the matter of drama by his sweep of imagination. He vitalized the manner and matter of the drama by his energizing power.

                             Marlowe saw clearly enough that the Romantic drama was suited to the needs of the nation. He knew that the romantic drama was played a very major role in drama. And because of the romantic drama was very express so well its abundant concrete life.

                             Marlowe also saw that for the romantic drama to be thing of beauty as well as a force, the medium of blank verse must be chosen.
         
                             Christopher Marlowe’s work night inside the reader thinks that his nature was highly passionate. In his most of work he saw expression by certain appeals to the imagination, such as the appeal of beauty. He never suggest the man of the world, the student of human nature, always the wistful visionary ; living in a world of his own, a world of beauty and wonder.

v    Character sketch of Dr. Faustus. :-
                                                                  
                   Dr. Faustus is the protagonist of the play. He was a brilliant scholar of 16th century from Wittenberg, Germany. He was a great German scholar, whose ambition for knowledge and wealth. He was well respected and famous German scholar. In this character Dr.Faustus we can say him a versatile Genius. He wants to be more and more knowledgeable and wanted to get all wit and wisdom. His guest of knowledge falls him down to the earth.

                   He was a tragic hero and he was a great scholar. Let’s see some characteristic of him.

v    As a protagonist :-

                   Dr. Faustus is a protagonist of play. He is a contradictory character capable of tremendous eloquence and possessing awesome ambition, yet prone to a strange, almost will full blindness and a willingness to waste powers that he gained at great cost. When we look Faustus as a protagonist of play we can easily find every element of protagonist and hero in him. He is a great protagonist & versatile genius. He is the central character of the play. He is a man with a quit enough knowledgeable.

v    As a scholar :-
                   Dr. Faustus was a great man with knowledge and a well respected and famous German scholar. He has a deep knowledge of logic, medicine, law and religion. He also knows about the other subject and knowledge of other subject. He has not satisfied with this subject only but he also knows about as must as god know. He imagines pilling up wealth from the four corners of the globe, reshaping the map of Europe and gaining access to every scrap of knowledge about the universe.

v  His quest for knowledge :-
                   Faustus was a person with great knowledge. He was a versatile genius. But he wants to get more knowledge. He wanted to be as knowledge as god. His aim was he knows all about the things and detail as well as god knows. He has a great hunger for knowledge made his way toward wrong direction. So, he tried black magic and moved toward black- magic to get knowledge.

v    Like a brave soldier :-
                   Faustus was brave soldier not like a battle field soldier but he was brave soldier like with his brain. He was not only a knowledgeable person but he was a brave soldier also. We welled him as a brave soldier because of he was used and learn black magic trick and with the help of this the person of Satan Mephistopheles came to him with ugly shape. When Mephistopheles came he was not afraid to look for him but he talks him with calmly and bravely. And he also didn't feel hesitate with talking to the devil. So this example, we can say that he was also a great soldier as well as knowledge person.

v    As a tragic hero :-
                   Faustus was a great versatile genius and very knowledgeable man. He was always quest for more knowledge and his quest for more knowledge made him with a tragic end. He was a man with great power of knowledge. He gains more and more knowledge because of his man ambition was he gets more and more knowledge as well as god knows.
                  
                   Once Faustus gains his long desired pores, he does not know what to do with them. He gets a more and more power of knowledge. He lost himself slowly. But, more generally, absolute power corrupts Faustus: Once he can do everything, he no longer wants to do anything.

v    As a Blank- Magician :-

                   Dr. Faustus was not a blank-magician when play start. But when we read this play we know that how he learns blank- magic. He has great knowledge of all forms. He was also a versatile genius. He was a respected German scholar. But he gets more knowledge and he knew all the things and get all the knowledge as well as god knows. His friend told him that you practice blank magic and he became a magician. He practices black Magic in the midnight and talk with the devil and Mephistopheles. And this way he became a blank- magician.

                   Dr. Faustus was not only a tragic hero but he was a common men. He was not like heroic personality, but his knowledge made him a great tragic hero. He was a very good and respected scholar in German society. He was a man with great knowledge and a great versatile genius.

                   In the play Dr. Faustus sells himself to devil and get 24 years power position. He sells himself to the devil because of he get more and more knowledge as well as god. Because he believes that god knew all the things so he is the king of the world. And his gain knowledge as well as god knows. So he became a god and he leaving in this world as a super human being.

                   He was also a smart person. And he gets more and more knowledge. His quest for knowledge was good things but his way to get this knowledge was wrong and so he met with tragic end.

v    To sum up :-

                   As a whole to classify the character of Faustus, we may say he was a versatile genius as well as German scholar. He was a hungry for knowledge like a brave soldier. He knew also black-magic. And his quest for knowledge met him with a tragic end.

    You have done very good assignment. You have characterized Dr.Faustus very well. But one thing I have to tell you that please change the wrong title of your assignment. In front you have written the title "Doctor Faustus as a morality play" but your assignment is about "character sketch of Doctor Faustus". So, first I was misunderstood by it. Otherwise you have written your assignment properly.
